I've done a fair bit of research on this piece, so I managed to find the maker and the date of manufacture, but the maker does not have an extensive history.

The piece was made in 1920 by a company called William Vale & Sons. They were registered in Chester, England in 1895 and went on to produce a multitude of quality silver pieces until their closure sometime in the late 1920s. By 1932, the factory was owned by Dawson Ltd., a company that specialized in electroplating.

The piece, itself, is beautiful. The lid is secure and the entire piece is in very good condition, save for a few surface dents. On the opposite end of the lid, you'll find a small ring which would have been used to hang the piece. This was most-probably found on a Chatelaine, which would have been worn by the woman of the house, on which were located all the pieces necessary for the running of a household - from house keys and sewing supplies to small scissors and even a pad of paper. These were a staple of the household, mainly in England, until the early part of the 20th century.
However, there is an element that sets this piece apart - the interior. I encourage you to search them for yourself - needle cases are usually made of Sterling Silver, but the interior is most-frequently left bare, allowing the ravages of time to change the interior into a dark, pewter-esque finish. This holder is quite different. You can see from the pictures that the interior of the case is lined in pearl. This is the only piece I was able to find of this construction, so I was at a loss as to the reason the pearl was added. However, I pried further to uncover a ridiculous piece of information... It seems that there existed high-end toothpicks. Yes, you heard correctly. Specifically for people who considered themselves of utmost importance, far too valuable to risk putting the likes of wood into one's mouth. Yes, ivory was carved into toothpicks that were (likely) kept in this beautiful little case, solely to pry through the incisors of only the highest of classes. Sadly, I don't believe we'll be able to find out whether needles, toothpick or both resided in this gorgeous little sterling case. Regardless, it is a beautiful piece of history, complete and in very good condition.
It measures 7 cm in length and just shy of 2 cm, at the thickest point (it tapers towards the end).

This is so simple and perfectly lovely, and I appreciate so much the beautiful packaging, and all of your hard work researching it, that I hesitate to use it for what I had intended, which was for my darning needles for knitting. Perhaps we can find some sterling silver toothpicks… I will keep checking your shop. Many, many thanks
