  • Details
Thomas Allom was a 19th century architect who made his name designing some of the most beautiful and influential buildings of the 1800s. Born in 1804, he was apprenticed to a famous architect for almost 7 years before striking out on his own. He attended Royal Academy school and, upon graduation, his designs and illustrations were included in several exhibitions, where they garnered a great deal of interest. He went on to design some beautiful buildings, such as Neo-classical buildings, such as Hull Trinity House (1839), extensions to Hull Royal Infirmary (1840) and Great Thornton Street Church (1843); he also designed the expansion of the Brownlow Hill workhouse in Liverpool (1842-1843). Although he was a well-respected and accomplished architect, he is mainly known for his topographical illustrations. Throughout the 1820s, he travelled extensively throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing beautiful illustrations for several publications. It is from this period that this print hails.
Roslyn Chapel (Rosslyn) may sound familiar... It is a 15th century Catholic church of no particular importance. However, it has been argued that it has a connection to the Freemasons, the Holy Grail and Freemasonry. However, medieval historians insist there is no evidence of such connections.

The print is in decent shape. There is a small tear along the bottom that would be covered, when framed. The printing of the title and creators is quite clear, however, and the details in the print are beautiful and unblemished.

It is a beautiful piece and would make a wonderful addition to any antique print collection.
