  • Details
This wonderfully-illustrated tin was made in the 1950s. Farley's Infant Feeding Rusks were touted as the best food to wean a child onto solid food. It is still being sold today, but rusks have gone out of style in lieu of fruit juices and yogourts. A rusk is a hard, dry biscuit or a twice-baked bread. It is sometimes used as a baby teething food. In some cultures, rusk is made of cake, rather than bread: this is sometimes referred to as cake rusk. In the United Kingdom, from whence this tin hails, the name also refers to a wheat-based food additive. It was added to milk or warm water and baby slowly learned how to deal with solids, eventually eating dry rusks. The company is quite old.
Farley's Health Products Limited started life in 1857 as a baker's shop, run by Mr. Samuel Farley, but they were made by his wife Ann Farley. They were very successful and in 1912, sold off the recipe and moved to Canada. The recipe went on to many successes through the 20th century until their sale, to Heinz, in 1994.

The tin is wonderful. I can't help but smile when I look at it. The children seem to come to life! It's beautifully illustrated with original images on either side. The text is written in English, Cambodian or Burmese and, I believe Chinese. This tin would have been marked with the languages of the target market, so this tin would haveeither been exported to Asia or sold in England to an Asian target market. It's a wonderful example of excellent mid-century lithography.
There are a few dents and scratches, commensurate with age, but overall, the tin is in good shape. All illustrations are clear, as is all the text. The interior has some very slight tarnishing in the corners, but is very usable.

It would make a wonderful piece of storage and doubles as a sun-shiney piece of conversation.
