Webster Art Deco Sterling Silver Locket

Sorry, this item has sold.

  • Details
This handsome locket is complete and includes a stunning antique Sterling chain.
It was made by the Webster company in the 1920s. The company has a lengthy history, starting in 1869 in North Attleboro, MA, when it was started by George K. Webster... or Elizer G Webster. It depends on which history is to be followed. The majority of the material available about the history of the Webster Company confirms the formation of the company in 1869, however, there was also a Webster Company founded in 1860, in New York, specializing in silver plating. They also, apparently, grew to an admirable size and continued into the 1960s, to be eventually sold to Oneida. However, it is my belief that the Webster Company in this case is the former. There are shifts in names and ownership, as various members of the family and close partners joined and left, were recruited and then retired. Eventually, one of the sons of the founder sold off the company in 1950 to Reed & Barton, a silversmith founded in 1940.
One of the only sure things I've uncovered is the quality of the pieces found under the Webster Company name. They are quite popular and although they were sold in fairly large numbers, very few exist today that are complete and unblemished.
In this case, the locket is complete and in excellent condition. There is one exception, as one corner on the backside has a small dent, but it doesn't affect the operation or function of the locket. The interior is in excellent condition with both frames still in place and unmarred. The maker's mark is clearly visible on the inside lip of both halves. It measures almost exactly 1 inch, squared (2.7 cm) and is very thin. Although the front of the locket has an empty space to engrave initials, it has remained unmarked. There are some surface scuffs and scratches commensurate with a century-old piece of silver, but nothing major.
The chain is just beautiful. Manufactured around the same time as the locket, it is a clearly-marked, Italian, Sterling chain. The clasp is in perfect condition and the chain is without kinks or bends. Truly an amazing feat over 100 years of use.
Both pieces have been left with their original patinas, but I'd be happy to ship a piece of silver cloth for you to polish both items up to a beautiful shine.

As always, should you have any questions or comments, I'm happy to return all messages by the end of the day.
