Antique 'Erven Lucas Bols Het Lootsje Amsterdam' Stoneware Bottle Crockware

The name of the brewery is a mouthful. It translates to 'Heirs of Bols' and refers to, reputably, the oldest continually operating brewery in the world.
They were founded in 1575, when the family opened their brewery just outside of the walls of the city of Amsterdam, next to a river. By the 1600s, Amsterdam's walls were extended to envelop the brewery and it became a lasting element of the city. During the 1800s, the family enjoyed tremendous success and wealth. It used much of these riches to travel the world and import new and exotic spices, with which they would create some of Europe's most imaginative and successful spirits. It continues to operate today, as one of the largest and diverse brewers in Europe.

This particular bottle was produced through the late 19th century into the early years of the 20th and more than likely contained gin. Later bottles can be recognized by their thick and resilient glaze as well as their clear and complete stamp of the maker. As well, in later examples, less information was included in the stamp, as the bottle was also adorned with one or more labels describing the contents. The bottles were available in three sizes - 1/2 litre, 3/4 litre and 1 litre. This is the 3/4 bottle, the rarest of the 3. Although several 1/2 and 1 litre examples are available online, 3/4 litre are harder to find, especially in such immaculate condition. This is an earlier example, as the stamp has yet to be cleaned up and mastered, in terms of application and finish. Another hint to the age is the letter 'A' stamped near the base. Initially, these bottles had makers assigned to them. These early bottles were important to establish manufacturing techniques and quality control. This is the earliest example that I am able to find, anywhere.

The bottle is near-perfect. There are two very small chips out of the top, but that is to be expected from a 150-year-old stoneware piece. The colours are just marvellous. During the firing process, the salt glaze that was added to the surface of the white bottle clay allowed some truly beautiful rust-coloured areas to appear.

This rare and beautiful example of 19th century stoneware would make a beautiful bit of decor in any room.

It measures 28 cm tall and 8 cm in diameter.
